This is a nice, quite thick, & well made cutting board, & that's a great investment.
The (dual) surface of this cutting board isn't slick, in fact, it's a bit rough. Any new equipment, cutting boards more specifically, should be washed & sanitized before using. In addition to this, I found that I wanted to oil it as well. The surface was just too dry for my liking, & I always have olive oil handy.

Woodworking Planshow to Woodworking Plans for It fits very well inside a drawer, that is under the counter top. This is good for two reasons. The first being if you want to store it in a drawer, you can do that, keep in mind that it will take up the drawer.
Second, is that you can turn it sideways & get a lower cutting board or extend your work area a little more.
The color of the wood matches very well with the kitchen, it isn't an eye sore or out of contrast when the cutting board is stored. This Pioneer Woman's cutting board is thick enough that over time, you will be able to sand off any surface imperfections, if they ever crop up.
Woodworking Planshow to Woodworking Plans for Do be safe with any cutting board, especially one that is wood. Cleaning & sanitizing this board isn't difficult & it easily fits in the sink. No, it is not dish washer safe. Hand wash, sanitize & air dry.
I used to think that tempered glass or plastic cutting boards were the bomb. However, this Pioneer Woman Cowboy Rustic 12 x 18 Acacia Wood Cutting Board beats them hands down! First, it is at least an inch thick, which makes it a sturdy service to work on. Next, it is easy to handle and has a large surface for cutting. Lastly, you can use BOTH sides of this board!
This board is easy to clean and maintain. I would recommend it for any kitchen where you LOVE to cook as much as I do!
My first thought when I unwrapped this cutting board was how big it was and also how beautiful the acacia wood is. It is a generously sized 12" x 18" so it is more than able to handle whatever it is you need to prepare on it. There are very easy to understand prep and care instructions that come with the cutting board so the first thing we did was to follow the instructions, washed it in hot water and let stand to dry. One thing I noticed after it was dry was that there were noticeable fibers on the board, which you Do see with unfinished wood. At first, I was concerned that they may be splinter-y so I ran my hand along the wood several times to see if anything stuck me, it did not....I read through the rest of the instructions about cleaning and applying mineral oil if the board looks dull or dry. Make sure to wipe away any excess oil. I have cut several things on this board, mainly bread and raw vegetables but I do try not to be too aggressive when cutting and trying not to "saw" the bread or vegetables or cut too deeply so that my knives gouge into the wood. I mentioned before about the fibers that were on the board. I looked at the bread and vegetables when I was finished to see if any were on the food, there was none. Again, I'd try not to cut too deeply and that also makes the cutting board last longer. One other thing I use this for is an extra XL trivet. It works quite well to put hot pan on or to use in the middle of our table for hot dishes. I like it, it's well made and does not require a ton of maintenance. I'd recommend...
I never thought I'd describe a piece of wood designed to protect your counter tops as beautiful, but this cutting board is very attractive. The weight is great - not too light, not too heavy, and thicker than my other cutting boards. It also has a great "feel" to the surface. I cook a lot and this board is one that might become a permanent fixture on my counters instead of being stored in the cabinet between uses. Please note it states on the packaging that it's not intended to be washed in the dishwasher, but rather by hand.
OK first thing when it was delivered the box was damaged but the board was ok.
I was surprised at the board's thickness and size yet it was lighter than I expected it to be.
When I first saw the color of the wood I thought to myself wow that's too nice looking piece of wood to be cutting stuff on and marking it all up.
In fact you could use it to server cheeses and cut up
The directions say not to put it in the dishwasher.
It basically says you need to clean it by hand.
You can dry it with a the 1 last update 04 Jun 2020 towel or let it air dry.You can dry it with a towel or let it air dry.
If it dries out they recommend using mineral spirits. I guess you can use olive oil or vegetable oil just make sure if safe for consumption.
Something to look out for when washing you board is you might notice strands or the board feeling gritty. If you look in my photo you can see little strands sticking up.
Let it dry and run a piece of sandpaper over it to know of any grit that's on it.
Wipe is down with a damp cloth and then run some mineral oil over it again and you should be good to go.
If the board starts to smell even after washing it try using some vinegar on it to get rid of the smell.
The wood will pick up odors from what is on it.
Last thing if you find the board moving around on you while you're cutting stuff which is shouldn't, throw a towel under it as there are no plastic feet on the bottom.
Woodworking Planshow to Woodworking Plans for The Pioneer Woman Cowboy Rustic cutting board lives up to its billing. The rustic look is in fashion and this is a perfect fit. Maybe too rustic however in this case. If you look at the side view of our cutting board, you can see that the edge includes a knot in the wood. It looks like this could be a week point over time. I feel the knot might eventually fall out. You can see a tiny gap behind the core of the knot that will probably grow with time.
All of that being said, we had no choice as to which cutting board we received. If you pick one up in person, you can very easily look for knots or other imperfections and make your own decision on which board is best.
Overall this could be a great product and worth five stars as long as you get to pick it out yourself. Ordering online might be a little more chancy. Ours may or may not stand the test of time. I may not be able to answer that for some time.
This is my first experience with a Pioneer Woman product and the first thing which drew me to this cutting board was it's generous size. I was looking for a large cutting board as my smaller one was just a little too small to cut larger things like watermelon. This board is 12"X 18 and very thick at an inch and a half. I like the thickness as it's highly unlikely to warp like skinnier boards.
I had read the reviews of this cutting board and many were critical of the unprocessed slab which yes, I also found to be rough and also I found when washing the wood fibers get fuzzy and come off. Some people were saying they were splinters but I would describe them more like wood pulp. After doing my research I found this to be very normal for the type of cutting board it is and will eventually wear down. When the manufacturers named the board "rustic" they were accurate! I lightly sanded it and and it looks and feels fine now. My criticism is that in the instructions there is no mention of of this which has left many to wonder if it is normal which could have been easily clarified.
Woodworking Planshow to Woodworking Plans for The only thing the instructions point out is the need to "oil" the board to condition it to prevent drying and cracking. I also had never heard of this so again I looked it up and found the oil waterproof and sanitize the wood as well. As directed I used mineral oil as vegetable oils will turn rancid. All and all I'm happy with this product and am sure it will last forever when it's properly cared for. The one thing which still confuses me it the front and back of the board are different as seen in the pictures I've attached.
I was really disappointed in the quality of this cutting board! I was surprised when it came it already had a few spots where it wasn't sanded as well as it should have been also it looked as if it had been poked with something pointy. I seasoned the board before I used it and after only one wash I actually had to sand the splinters away. This is definitely a light duty cutting board. I don't think I would recommend this cutting board to my friends and family.
I have several cutting board in wood and some with different materials. By experience I always test any new board before use on rush to void any problem food preparation. After hand wash and dry, I saw some chip in the wood without have use yet any knife yet I could not recommend this cutting wood board to be use safely.
I was really excited to try out this board. Acacia is suppose to be a genuine hard wood rich with natural oils that gives it a natural water resistance and unlike bamboo, it will not dull your knives as easily. I have not tried out other acacia wood cutting boards, so I cannot give any comparisons. Maybe there are better quality acacia wood cutting boards out there, but this one is not very good. After I opened it, I noticed a weird odor coming from the chopping board, but like I said, I have never used an acacia wood cutting board before, so I am not sure if that is the natural smell of the wood. I expected the surface to be smooth, but boy was I wrong. It was the complete opposite! The surface was rough and had small pieces of wood sticking out. I thought maybe washing it will help. I followed the instructions, I only hand washed the cutting board, but it seemed like the roughness and splinters sticking out became worst. There are 2 things I like about the board, the thickness and the size. The cutting board I usually use is half the thickness and a lot smaller. I really like how it feels cutting on the The Pioneer Woman Cowboy Rustic 12 x 18 Acacia Wood Cutting Board because it is so thick, it gives a good sturdiness feel to it when you're cutting on it and the amount of surface area it has gives me so much space to work on, but there is always a trade off. The bigger it is, the heavier it is. It was a little difficult for me to hold with one hand while wiping the surface with the other, but besides the weight issue, I am terrified to wipe the surface with my bare hands because I am scared I will get a splinter. Another issue I have with this cutting board is the finishing of the corner. One corner of my cutting board looks like it got hacked off, now I am left with a dented corner. I have uploaded photos which I hope can show the roughness of the surface and my dented corner.
