Seems to me that board game tables are all the talk on the forum these days. Kickstarter summaries and board game table companies going out of business or not delivery as expected. Finally got around to posting my build.

I decided I would make a Denis inspired vaulted board game table.

This was not something I took lightly. I did custom furniture design for a small furniture company in Regina Saskatchewan. The carpenter there taught me joint detailing and material selection. I was able to provide them with presentation drawings (Sketchup fyi free to model) that they could show to clients wiling to spend large amounts of money on custom tables and bedroom sets. It was a great relationship. I got paid and I learned for 1 last update 2020/08/07 a lot. Since then I also have built a few prior pieces of furniture (custom shoe cabinet, bedside tables, custom wardrobe with integrated shoe storage built into the stairs). So I had the tools already and have done other renovations in our houses. What made me decide to do this. I saw the prices and the options that were available. There were and are a lot of options and companies. The issue was I couldn't afford to pay $1000+ when my board game collection is maybe worth that now. So how could I get the benefit without the cost. Build it myself. It took more planning and detailing than it did to construct it and finish it.This was not something I took lightly. If you are thinking about making one it is not as hard as you are making it out to be. Yes I had some experience making furniture. But honestly the joints aren't difficult. Kreg jig and you are good to go. The only barrier is having the tools and the time. The table is based onthe Denis from Geeknsons. They make a great product, but I just couldn't justify paying the cost. Call me frugal but I would rather spend it on games. I ended spending just under $400 complete with finishes which surprisingly was the most expensive part. This included a used router and bits and all materials. By the way 3 coats of poly urethane isn't cheap. But that is what you get for using soft cheap spruce pine fur (SPF) lumber.

Why a vaulted table? In this case it can be used with or without a vault. I use the vault mostly to prevent having things spill off the table or spill on. If you have ever had a drink spill on the table while gaming you know what I am talking about. We also play with the insert at the table surface as well. Just depends on the game and whether or not there are dice. Dice are great to chuck against the vault. Basically massive dice tray. Also no components get bumped. The other benefit is those long games can be paused and not disturbed. How often does that happen maybe 2 times a year but when it does is great to just remove the leaves and bam. Gaming instantly from where you left off. Unless the kids find a way to disturb the table. Another benefit is if you know you are going to play 2 games that night one can be set up on top and then removed to reveal the one underneath. This is great for games with long set up times. Think Gloomhaven, Twilight Imperium, Eclipse or other large games that setup time is extensive. The custom rail is not being used other than drink holders at this time. But now that it is there if you want something it can be added. That is something makes if flexible in the future.

Woodworking Planshow to Woodworking Plans for Is a custom table worth it? A qualified yes. It wasn't worth $1000+ for me. But $400 was something I could afford and still get a large playing surface. (3"-11" x 5'-0"). If you play a ton of games totally worth it. If this doubles as a dining table then hell yah. If you can build it the value is that much more. Also it is extremely rewarding and a great learning experience. I was great to build again. I enjoyed the building almost as much as I enjoy the board time.

Take a chance and expand your skill set. Also if you know that there is something that you want incorporated into your table you can make it happen. Thanks for looking and if you want more information send me a message and I would be happy to help.

Woodworking Planshow to Woodworking Plans for As a user of both Sketchup is way more user friendly and intuitive than AutoCAD. I learned from the Sketchup online traing videos. Which by the way are excellent. The best thing is its price. Free for everyone. Makes it easy to both access and no commitment required. I did end up purchasing a full license because of how useful if a tool it was for me.

You made a gorgeous table. Thanks for sharing!

Woodworking Planshow to Woodworking Plans for Side question: Do people actually use the card holders? (Personally, I can't imagine myself playing a game and not holding my hand of cards.)

Hey for 1 last update 2020/08/07 thanks. Pretty proud of how it turned out.Hey thanks. Pretty proud of how it turned out.

No. It only happens when you have a huge hand full of cards in say Terrafirming Mars and you are planning out your play. That or you need to get a drink and some chips. It is something that was easy to add. It was just a single saw cut. But it almost never gets used. I mention it the imgur album. That and the risk associated to damaging the cards accidently is a definite drawback.

Drink holders are by far the most used item. Just havent put the poly urethane finish on them so they are not pictured. Next thing that might be an accessory is a shelf for the rule book and the box.

No plans but I do have the sketchup model that I built it from. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IYeclmoAbNBjVrbamXtOGX65a5vosOmW/view?usp=sharing I made a layout of each piece and had a separate measurement sheet that I used. I didn't end up saving it. Either I forgot or just printed it and started building. I was a little excited at the time.
